MLK Day: Where Do We Go From Here: Community or Chaos?
Join Whose Streets? Our Streets! and MLK Transportation Justice for a workshop:
Surveillance under Authoritarianism
Monday, January 19, 2026, 9:30 - 10:45 AM
Garfield High School, Room 239
Under authoritarianism, surveillance is used to intimidate communities and suppress political opposition. Technologies such as cameras, facial recognition, and license plate readers are used to monitor people. From the FBI’s COINTELPRO program beginning in the 1950s to today’s National Security Presidential Memorandum on “countering domestic terrorism”, organizers have been surveilled, targeted, and punished.
Join us to hear from Aaron Dixon, co-founder of Seattle’s Black Panther Party, to learn the history of surveillance as used against organizers, along with national experts and local organizers speaking about surveillance under authoritarianism today. We will confront fear, resist division, and remember that community is what keeps us safe.
